Initially, in my teens, I was a huge combat flight sim fan. At that time I found civilian flight simulators boring. As I outgrew that phase of my life I started to appreciate civilian aviation more. I fly both types of simulators now... Amiga 500 had some great flight sims back in the day...

picture: 1st flight sim
It's Oakland Air Force Base, or something like that, isn't it? Don't you take off and then go buzz the Golden Gate Bridge?
Our first flight sim was on the Amiga. Crashed a lot of planes with that joystick.

Flight Simulator 95 for me. I still maintain Flight Simulator 98 was the best though. It's probably the one to have improved the most since the previous edition and there were stacks of class add-ons for it, hell, I even got Northern Ireland scenery which no company makes and you can't get literally anywhere.
Taking it a little further, my favourite add-on was the 'Greatest Airlines Boeing 737-400' pack. You got a flightdeck VHS, a full 737 manual and great realism for about £30, which is great value. I have a huge debt to Flight Simulators. I mean, the computer monitor wrecked my eyes and now I need glasses, but it meant when I actually came to fly a Cessna 172 I knew what the instruments did and how they worked. I also bought myself some aviation manuals and learned them all! It was a bit of an obsession but it made training so much easier. |

My first flight sim was ACE (Air Combat Emulator) for the Commodore 64 back in the '80s. I had another C64 sim called Top Gun (cheezy, based on the movie), then Microsoft Flight Simulator for MSDOS PC - and every version since then!

I've spent a lot of money on the software, joysticks, yokes, pedals, and computer upgrades just to play flight sims, but it definately paid off when taking actual flight lessons!! |

My first sim was F-19 Stealth Fighter (MicroProse) on my 8086 at college when my friends and I should've been prepping better for finals. 2 color graphics (retina-burning green and black) and about 4-5 frames per second. Having to "thread the needle" through enemy air defenses really got the pulse going - I remember flying the Central Europe theater was always good for breaking into a cold sweat...

My first Flighsim, yeah...FS1 for sure. And i can also state that i flew all flightsim's out...
The most fun i have ever had was in Falcon 1, wireframe MiG's ( Who cared ) and a verry small world. Now i fly a lot with FS2004, Falcon 4 AF and Lock-On. |
