Log Books
 
I have a jep log book and for some reason they felt that the "landing" column should be half as wide as the others.

I can't fit four digits together inside the box.
My box looks like this

15
64

to represent 1,564 day landings.

Do you guys have some form of short hand?
Especially for those of you with over 10,000 landings.
Or is my log book just a blacksheep.

Just curious. :radar:

Douglas - are you referring to the "Landing" box on each line, corresponding to each flight - or do you mean where you total the column at the bottom of the page?

Which Jepp logbook are you using? Can you include a scan of a page?

My landings are in the four digit range as well and the only way I get the number in there is with a sharp pencil. All of my totals are in pencil. I am using the Jepp professional logbook that is green and brown.

I know a lot of guys that stopped logging landings though.

As far as I know, the only requirement for documenting landings is for demonstrating currency. For example, three take-offs and landings to a full stop in the preceding 90 days. And I don't believe there is a reg requiring this be documented by a logbook entry though its the logical and practical way to record it.

For someone working in an air-carrier (or Part 135) environment, the documentation exists outside of the airman's personal records, should there ever be a need to present such documentation.

But none of that explains why Jepp is so skimpy with the space allocated. I use a Jepp logbook and I enter the number of landings (almost always "1") on each line entry - never more than a single digit for which there's plenty of room. But I never bother to subtotal them and carry them over to the next page because the total number is not meaningful (except as a matter of personal interest). I just figure if I ever need to present documentation to demonstrate regulatory currency, I can show the individual entries.

Yeah it is the "totals" part of the column that is too small for me.

I think I will keep logging my landings because I still find it interesting.

So nobody has any short hand techniques.
I might experiment a little bit.

Little anecdote about not logging things anymore.
I had a medevac heli pilot come in for a check out in our 172.
I asked for his log book so I could sign it like I am required to. The last time he logged anything was four and a half years ago.
I didn't have the heart to break the streak.

Anybody know any other professionals that haven't logged in year?
Is it common?

I don't bother to log landings unless I am doing circuits for currency requirements, and in that case, the total is irrelevant, just the number in the last 6 months. I'm always current on the types I fly for my job, but am usually out of currency on singles, so if I am about to rent one and am going up to do my required number of T/Os and landings to be legal to carry pax, then I write down a 5 in the landings column, but still don't bother to total those numbers. Do you guys have some kind of requirement for total landings for ATPL or something?

Not that I have read.

If I keep doing this CFI work for a couple of more months, I should by then have more hours of dual given than total landings!

Don't ask me why, but that excites me to have that in my log book.

I log my landings for each individual flight to keep my own record of currency, even though I keep a seperate flight log at my company's office for duty time and currency records. I've never added up my total landings since I wouldn't ever really need to know that, athough I do know a few people that do it for their own amusement.

I was actually thinking that it might be cool to go back through my logbooks and see how many different places I've been to, and how many times at each. What gave me the idea is that for fun I've been totalling up the number of times that I've landed on Sable Island, because people sometimes ask that one, and it is a place that not many people get to visit, much less land on (it's a beach landing). Years ago there was a guy that did well over 1000 trips there, but he was doing multiples in a day for resupplying a project or something. I'm somewhere around 150, I think, after 3 years so I may never make 1000 at this rate... : (

I just had some inspiration which is kind of a rare thing.

Maybe for zeros you could use a decimal. For instance:

1024 = 1.24 (don't know how much this would help)

Also, you could just leave off the first decimal except for when you change thousands (1-2)

Just throwing some ideas out there.

Many of the guys I work with no longer keep a log book, since as stated before with 135 there are other documents that show that you flew (and landed). Most stop once they get over 10,000hrs.:radar:

You know I might change my mind about filling in my log book seeing that I already dread filling out the pages, but for now I see it as too great of a history book to think I won't log in the future.

I don't plan on not keeping a log book. I think It'd be pretty cool to have 30-40,000hrs logged someday. I don't dread filling out my log book, though I've got it down pretty easy now. I log one trip on each line instead of each leg, greatly cuts down both the writting and pages.:radar:

I have 35 little red crew books (one per year) in which I've logged each my airline trips. Each book has around 600-800 hrs in it. Then there's my "Form5" log of 25 years of military flying and of course my GA time. Do you know I have made absolutely no landings.

wondering what you guys are doing with more then one logbook at an interview.

I use the Jepp logbook and coming up on my 4th logbook (with only 4 years of flying total) I dont like the big Jepp logbook because its to big to haul around, and if you lose one, you lose it all.

what would your employer think if you showed up to an interview with a bag full of logbooks vs one big one? Or maybe come with the latest one to save the embarrassment?

I took booth of mine, just keep them together. Though in all reality there's only about 6-700hrs in the first log book (small jep) the other 5,000hrs is in my big Jepp log book, which is still only about 1/2 full. I would expect that the large Jepp books can easily be a 10 year log book for me, and I fly quite abit. As far as the book being big to haul around, would you rather haul one big book or 10 small ones?:radar:

Well, I only haul the last small one around. The others I keep in a safe place. I can easily slip my small latest one in my headset bag and when in cruise catch up on my entries. If I lose it, its not the end of the world.

Oh I didn't realize you still carried it with you. I haven't carried my log book with me since I got my cert. I keep them at home in a safe place, and I carry a log sheet with me that I keep in my flight can then transfer to my log periodically.:radar:
